How is my pension calculated?

Understanding how your pension is calculated can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be!

The Municipal Employees’ Pension Plan (MEPP) uses a formula based on three main factors:

Pensionable Service

  • Time you contributed to MEPP
  • Purchased service or approved disability waivers
  • Leaves of absence with contributions
  • The more years you work, the more pensionable service you earn

Highest Average Salary (HAS)

  • Average of your three highest calendar years of pensionable salary
  • If you work less than full-time, your salary is annualized
  • If you leave mid-year, part of that year is replaced by your fourth-highest year
  • Earning more during your career increases your HAS

Accrual Rate

  • The rate at which your benefits in MEPP will accumulate for your years of pensionable service
  • *Different periods of service may have different accrual rates

Example – Jim’s Calculation

Pensionable Service: 22.125 years x
HAS: $2,421.31/month x
Accrual Rate*=

Total Pension
To Age 65: $1,071.42/month
After 65: $888.57/month
